Oklahoma State basketball: Marcus Smart sets OSU steals record

With his court time running down Tuesday night, Marcus Smart saw that he had nine steals.

He didn't know it was a school record at the time, but he did know that he wanted more.

“I was trying to go for 10,” Smart said, “but unfortunately I didn't get it.”

In a 93-40 rout of Utah Valley, Smart was limited to 25 minutes, with coach Travis Ford emptying his bench down the stretch.

With more time, Smart would have had a good shot at No. 10 — which would have tied the Big 12 record — if not more.

As it was, Smart bettered the previous mark of eight steals, which was originally set by Brooks Thompson against Colorado in 1993 and later matched by Desmond Mason against Houston Baptist in 1998.

“Marcus is a guy who defensively is the best I've seen as far as just reading plays, being able to anticipate where the next pass is going to be,” Ford said. “And he's got very strong hands, a couple of times he just took it out of a guy's hands.”

The Cowboys totaled 18 steals on the night, tying for third-most in a game by an OSU team.
