Oklahoma State basketball: Phil Forte and the Cowboys rout Utah Valley

— Don't bother telling Phil Forte to back off on the basketball floor.

Not even with a massive lead in a semi-meaningless game and months still to play in the season.

There's no self-shutoff switch for the sophomore guard, whose work ethic was his ticket here.

“No matter what, as long as I'm on the court, that's just kind of how I'm going to play,” said Forte, nodding to his pal and hardball mentor, Marcus Smart, seated in the chair next to him after setting a school record with nine steals Tuesday night.

“I learned that from this guy. As long as you're on the court, no matter what the score is, you need to play 100 percent all the time.”

So Cowboys coach Travis Ford eventually pulled the plug on Forte, calling a timeout with 8:09 to play to get him out, following a stretch that saw him body-skid across the floor for a loose ball, then fire in his final shot in a 19-point night, leading OSU's 93-40 thumping of Utah Valley.

“Phil only knows one way to go, so a little bit, ‘Let's get him out,'” Ford said. “He doesn't know any other way to do it. Him and Marcus, that's why you've got to be really careful. In practice, everything, that's what they do. That's the way they play.”

Even at that point, it was too late for Utah Valley, since Forte had done his damage, leading six Cowboys in double figures, making 7 of 11 shots from the floor, including 4 of 8 from outside the arc.
