Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy addresses Bill Young's departure, revamped defense at Tulsa Caravan stop

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy used the words “aggressive,” “zing” and “swagger” when asked at the Tulsa Caravan stop what he hopes to see change with the Cowboy defense under new coordinator Glenn Spencer.

Specifically, Gundy candidly addressed his desire for the defensive backs to play tighter coverage, a tactic addressed heavily during spring practice.

“If it’s third-and-6, I don’t want a guy to catch the ball uncontested for six yards,” he said. “Again, I’m not trying to throw anyone under the bus … There’s more to it than that, but that’s really kind of what I want to do.

“I want to challenge (the opposing offense). If they make a really good throw and catch and they get (a first down), so be it. But I just kind of want it to be challenged.”

The person Gundy would presumably be throwing under the bus is previous defensive coordinator Bill Young, who was not retained after the 2012 season. But Gundy expressed appreciation for Young’s four-year tenure at OSU and acknowledged how difficult a defensive coordinator’s job can be when facing the up-tempo, high-powered offenses of the Big 12.

“Bill Young has been really good for us and Bill is a good friend of mine,” Gundy said. “I thought Bill was a good hire at the right time. I just felt like we needed a change, and I don’t think it’s Bill’s fault.

“Unfortunately, I have to make difficult decisions at times, and I’m not always right. But at that particular time I felt like we just needed a little change, a little zing.”
