Oklahoma State DC Glenn Spencer still wants more quality depth

One of Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer’s primary goals in the final days before the Cowboys’ season opener against Mississippi State in Houston? Continue to build quality depth at certain positions.

Which positions, exactly? Spencer wouldn’t specify. Defensive end and cornerback seem like the obvious spots, though solidifying third-teamers at defensive tackle, middle linebacker and weakside linebacker would appear to be priorities, too.

Spencer, like others, have stressed the importance of keeping guys fresh when the defense is on the field for so many plays when facing the Big 12′s up-tempo offenses. He doesn’t want to see his core players on the field for 1,000 snaps this season.

“I can tell right now where they’re at,” Spencer said of the spots that need more depth, “and I know I’m probably more worried about that than (anything). Everybody’s probably saying, ‘Why are you so hard on this backup?’ Because I know what’s coming down the road in Week 8, 9 and 10.

“That’s why I’m so concerned about a backup and his development, because I know we’re gonna have to count on him. Right now, he’s probably sitting there going, ‘I’m not going to play. They don’t count on me that much.’ And they are so wrong. They just have no idea what it’s going to be like.”
