Oklahoma State defensive tackle Calvin Barnett has been named to the Bednarik Award watch list, which is given to the nation’s best defensive player by the Maxwell Football Club.
Barnett was the Big 12′s Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2012 after recording 30 tackles (8.5 for loss), one sack, four quarterback hurries and one pass breakup in his first season as a Cowboy after transferring from Navarro Junior College.
South Carolina defensive end Jadaveon Clowney is the preseason favorite to win the award. Other Big 12 players on the watch list include Oklahoma cornerback Aaron Colvin, TCU defensive end Devonte Fields, Baylor linebacker Bryce Hager, Texas defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat, TCU cornerback Jason Verrett and Kansas State safety Ty Zimmerman. Last season, Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o won the award.
