It’s clear preseason expectations are high for Oklahoma State defensive tackle Calvin Barnett.
Barnett was named to two more watch lists Thursday, the Bronco Nagurski Award given to college football’s Defensive Player of the Year by the Football Writers Association of America and the Outland Trophy awarded to the nation’s best interior lineman. Cornerback Justin Gilbert and linebacker Shaun Lewis, meanwhile, are also on the watch list for the Nagurski Award.
Barnett is also on the list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which is awarded by the Maxwell Football Club to college football’s best defensive player.
Barnett was the Big 12′s Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2012 after recording 30 tackles (8.5 for loss), one sack, four quarterback hurries and one pass breakup in his first season as a Cowboy after transferring from Navarro Junior College.
Gilbert had a disappointing junior season in 2012, as he did not record an interception. He finished the season with 63 tackles, nine pass breakups and one forced fumble. An electric kick returner, Gilbert is also on the watch list for the Paul Hornug Award given to the nation’s most versatile player.
Lewis tallied 58 tackles (7.5 for loss), 2.5 sacks, four pass breakups, four quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery last season and was a second-team All-Big 12 selection.
