In reality, Connelly’s season as an assistant in high school football was a minor detour in a career filled with 18 years of college experience.

His stops include Arizona State (2012, associate head coach/offensive line), UTEP (associate head coach/co-offensive coordinator/offensive line), UCLA (2007, offensive line), Alabama (2003-06, offensive line), Washington State (2001-02, offensive line) and San Jose State (2000). His most decorated pupil was former Alabama star Andre Smith, who won the 2008 Outland Trophy and became a top-10 NFL Draft pick.

In 2012, Arizona State ranked 25th nationally in rushing (205.31 yards per game) but 110th in sacks allowed (38). Sun Devil coach Todd Graham fired Connelly after the season.

Connelly is a native of the Dallas suburb of Carrollton, Texas, and played at Texas A&M-Commerce.
