Oklahoma State football: Cowboys receivers, game officiating get low marks

BY BERRY TRAMEL Published: September 9, 2012

Here is a look at Berry Tramel's Report Card for Oklahoma State's 59-38 loss to Arizona:

Lunt played well for his first real collegiate competition. Lunt made a couple of poor decisions and a couple of poor throws, and the blitz-induced interception he threw in the fourth quarter was returned for a touchdown by Jonathan McKnight and effectively sunk OSU. But Lunt mostly stayed poised and delivered the ball on target. Lunt didn't get much help from his receivers. On Lunt's first interception, Tracy Moore fell down, giving two Arizona defenders free reign at the ball, and on Lunt's final pick, the ball ricocheted off the hands of OSU flanker Josh Stewart.

The Cowboys did a decent job of stopping Arizona's run game. But Wildcat receivers ran free all game long. When OSU produced a decent pass rush, quarterback Matt Scott quickly hit open receivers. When the Cowboys produced decent coverage, Scott waited patiently for a receiver to break open.

Lay aside the 167 penalty yards called against OSU. The Pac-12 crew didn't seem to have control of the game. Classic example – after the first quarter clock reached zero, Arizona snapped the ball a second or two later and scored a touchdown. It took replay review to correct the obvious. The referee was Shawn Hochuli, son of talkative NFL referee Ed Hochuli.

The Cowboy receivers were not good. Blake Jackson dropped two passes; Isiah Anderson dropped what would have been a 49-yard TD pass. Perhaps worse, Joseph Randle lost a first-quarter fumble, which squelched OSU momentum. Randle also lost a fumble a week ago against Savannah State, though it was negated by penalty.
