Shanbour had a scholarship offer from Colorado, but that situation changed when coach Jon Embree was let go. Northwestern (La.) State offered him, and programs like East Carolina, Indiana and multiple Ivy League schools were showing interest.

Shanbour threw for more than 1,500 yards and ran for nearly 900 in his prep school season. As a senior at Heritage Hall in 2011, he threw for 2,612 yards and 37 touchdowns with just three interceptions.

“All I want is a shot,” he said. “That's all I asked for. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. I want to be a coach, so why not learn playing for the best coaches in the country.”
