Oklahoma State football: Grading the Cowboys' rout of Savannah State

by Jenni Carlson Published: September 1, 2012

The Cowboys used a whopping 94 players Saturday night, so there were lots of second-, third- and even fourth-string players on the field. Yet, the reserves played a relatively clean game. Add in several dynamic performances, including three touchdowns from third-string running back Desmond Roland and eight catches from Austin Hays, and it was a good night to be an OSU backup.

Much improved over last season. The video was a solid montage of proud moments in Cowboy history, including Alex Elkins hitting Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones and Jamie Blatnick returning the fumble in last year's Bedlam game. That play got a huge cheer from the OSU faithful.

A couple new faces on the Cowboy defense had good nights. Defensive tackle Calvin Barnett had the “did-he-just-do-that?” moment of the night when he tackled Savannah State's running back at almost the same time he took the handoff. And true freshman cornerback Ashton Lampkin had an interception.

The Cowboy running back had only five carries in the game but scored three touchdowns.

Not only was the attendance strong — 55,784 — but also there were actually people in the stadium when the game ended. To anyone who stayed until the final horn, hats off to you.
