STILLWATER — After a lukewarm performance at last month's NFL Combine, Joseph Randle gets his next chance to try to impress scouts and improve his draft stock Tuesday at Oklahoma State's pro day.
Randle, along with most of the Cowboys' departed seniors, will participate in tests such as the 40-yard dash, vertical and broad jumps and bench press as well as position drills at Boone Pickens Stadium.
In Indianapolis, Randle's 40 time of 4.63 seconds ranked 18th out of the 33 running backs that ran, a group that did not include Alabama's Eddie Lacy and South Carolina's Marcus Lattimore. He did not bench press or participate in the complete slate of on-field drills, likely because of a hand injury. He did, however, rank in the top seven among running backs in the broad jump (10 feet, three inches) and vertical jump (35 inches).
Despite the subpar 40 time, NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock praised Randle's overall skill set during the combine. He also stressed that elite straight-line speed isn't always an indicator of NFL success for a running back.
“He runs upright, but he's got great foot quickness, he can make you miss in the hole,” Mayock said of Randle. “His acceleration and burst is excellent from that movement.”
Randle, who opted to declare for the draft following his junior season, was one of the Cowboys' most reliable and productive offensive weapons in 2011 and 2012. He amassed more than 1,400 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns last season and is also known for his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.
NFL.com and CBS both project Randle as a second- or third-round draft pick, while ESPN predicts he'll be selected in the middle rounds. He is not ranked in ESPN Draft Expert Mel Kiper's top 5 running backs available.
