Oklahoma State football: Mega-booster Boone Pickens says 'we need to do better on OU'

OSU FOOTBALL — Oklahoma State mega-booster Boone Pickens met with media in Arlington, Texas, prior to the Cowboys’ game vs. Florida State. Pickens said he’s happy with the state of the program except for the Cowboys’ lack of success vs. Oklahoma.

Boone Pickens stands optimistic about this Oklahoma State football season.

But he’s still smarting some from a year ago, too.

When asked for a state of the program assessment, Pickens found himself hung up on one glaring weakness in OSU’s overall record: Bedlam.

Pickens used his first major gift in 2003 as a starting point, then traced it forward. And while the program has enjoyed unequaled success for its history over that span, it’s the record against Oklahoma that seemed to override his satisfaction.

“I look at where we were when it started,” Pickens said inside AT&T Stadium before OSU’s game against Florida State. “Take off from 2003 forward. We won in ’02, and go forward from ’03, 10 years, we’ve won one. Out of 10.

“And if you go back and look at our record historically, that’s about what we’ve won over the last 50 or 100 years, isn’t it? We win about one out of 10.”

Asked if Bedlam is his ultimate measuring stick, Pickens backed off, but just a bit.

And last year’s 33-24 loss in Stillwater was a sticking point.

“Not ultimate,” he said. “But you remember what I said back in ’05, I said we’re going to be competitive. When you look at the other schools we’ve played, we’re competitive. The only one we haven’t been competitive with is OU.
