Oklahoma State football: Mike Gundy busts out a classic birthday dance caught on video

STILLWATER — Mike Gundy’s dance moves lit YouTube on fire in 2011. Get ready for round two.

Tuesday was the Oklahoma State football coach’s 47th birthday. And a few minutes before the Cowboys wrapped up morning practice, the OSU Marching Band and Gundy’s wife, Kristen, surprised the team with a performance and a Happy Birthday banner.

The entire ordeal was caught on video, providing us a clip of Gundy busting out this dance number:

It’s kind of like only the first step of the La Macarana, with a little Bernie and Stanky Leg mixed in.

Whatever you want to call it, one thing is for certain: It’s another classic shakedown from the coach who taught us How To Gundy after the Cowboys won a 30-29 thriller at Texas A&M three years ago.

The surprise performance was set up by Wayne Bovenshcen, assistant director of the marching band, and Kristen Gundy.

Bovenschen has been with the OSU music department for 28 years. He said when Gundy was the Cowboys’ quarterback, the drumline would play along as the team walked from the locker room to the field during home game days.

Bovenschen thought it would be fitting to celebrate Gundy’s birthday with the old-time tradition. He said he had wanted to do something like this for the past two years.

So with a bit of sneakiness, he caught the coach off guard and captured cinematic-dance gold in the process.

“I don’t know who contacted them and brought them over,” Gundy said. “But it was neat.”

More to come on this later.
