Oklahoma State football: Mike Gundy doesn't view Bedlam as a 'hated rivalry'

Bedlam week can provide plenty of opportunity for verbal sparring matches between Oklahoma State and Oklahoma fans. It can provide bulletin board material, such as Sooner offensive lineman Gabe Ikard scoffing Monday at the suggestion that OU will play the role of spoiler in Saturday's game.

But Cowboy coach Mike Gundy doesn't feed into that type of extracurricular activity, stressing that he doesn't view Bedlam as a “hated rivalry.”

“Our players feel like if they play well and take care of the football that they can beat anybody that they play,” Gundy said. “But we certainly have respect for the teams that we play. I know that the fans, the people, may not want to hear out that, but some of those guys (on the OU staff), most of those guys that I know are my friends. …

“I go back a long way with a lot of those guys and so I certainly don't see it as a hated rivalry. That's just me personally. Do we want to win? Yeah, we want to win. Do we want to win every Saturday? You bet we do. Do we want to play hard? Do we want to be physical? You bet.

“But to feel that way about them, that's just never been my nature. I guess I can say that to make people feel good, but I'm more concerned with tomorrow's practice than I am necessarily that part of the game.”

PICKENS ENGAGED

The Thanksgiving holiday weekend was particularly special for OSU megabooster Boone Pickens, as he announced to family Saturday his engagement to girlfriend Toni Brinker, according to The Dallas Morning News.

Brinker is the widow of Dallas restaurant entrepreneur Norman Brinker. He was the founder of Steak & Ale and spent time as the head of Jack in the Box, Burger King, Chili's, Bennigan's and Brink's coffee shop in Lakewood, Texas.
