Oklahoma State football notebook: Cowboys defend the Belldozer almost perfectly

Justin Brown had a size advantage in the matchup at 6-foot-3, 209 pounds.

Brodrick Brown finished with 10 tackles, all solo, trying to contain Justin Brown, who caught 15 passes for 146 yards, his longest going for 21.

On the opposite side of the field, cornerback Justin Gilbert led the Cowboys in tackles with 11 total (seven solo).

From week to week, one of OSU's special teams units is involved in a crucial play, whether good or bad for the Cowboys.

Kansas State and Texas each had big returns in defeats of the Cowboys, and OSU has been on the positive end of big special teams plays as well.

On Saturday, OSU gave up a momentum-swinging 81-yard punt return touchdown by Jalen Saunders that tied the game at 38 in the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys took the lead two possessions later, but couldn't regain momentum.

“I thought that the punt return was a nice play and it changed the momentum,” Gundy said. “We did recover and came back, but we couldn't put a stop together at the end of the game.”

Bedlam brought out plenty of stars, including a couple of former Oklahoma State stars from other sports, and another who was as close to a Cowboy as one could be.

Professional golfer Scott Verplank was on the sideline for the game, as was former Cowboy basketball player Keiton Page.

St. Louis Cardinals star outfielder Matt Holiday, a Stillwater graduate who never made it to OSU after getting drafted from high school, was in attendance as well. He was on the sideline with his older brother, Josh Holliday, the Cowboys' current head baseball coach.

The 75-yard touchdown pass from Clint Chelf to Josh Stewart on the first snap of the second half was OSU's longest scoring play from scrimmage this season, and its sixth one-play scoring drive of the season... The Cowboys have scored at least 40 points in the last three Bedlam games... Stewart went over 100 yards for the fourth time of the season, finishing with 11 catches to move into fourth place on OSU's single-season reception chart. He has 84 catches this season, tied with Hart Lee Dykes' 1988 season, and trailing only Dez Bryant (87 in 2008), Rashaun Woods (107 in 2002) and Justin Blackmon (122 in 2011). Stewart is now 11th in career receptions with 103... Redshirt freshman David Glidden saw his first action of the season on offense, getting in at slot receiver. Glidden has been used as a punt returner previously... Saturday's all-white uniform combination, the team's traditional road outfit before the multiple uniform looks were added last year, were worn for the second time in the last two seasons. The Cowboys went all-white at Missouri last year.
