Oklahoma State football point-counterpoint: Which QB is more on the spot? Texas' David Ash or OSU's J.W. Walsh?

FROM STAFF REPORTS Published: September 28, 2012

Which QB is more on the spot tonight?

JOHN HELSLEY

UT's David Ash

Texas has arrived at a suddenly familiar crossroad: early season optimism meets real competition.

In this spot the past two years, the Longhorns have veered off course.

Desperate to prove itself as “back,” Texas craves a win at the outset of what shapes up to be a three-game gauntlet that follows with West Virginia and Oklahoma.

More than that, the Horns crave quality and consistency from David Ash. Because no matter how much Texas wants to lean on its run game and a stiff defense, there's no hiding the quarterback in the explosive Big 12.

So Ash – who's off to a solid start (against weak competition) – must produce.

And now.

The course of a Texas season depends on it

JENNI CARLSON

J.W. Walsh

Oklahoma State has a quarterback-centric offense. Texas has a running back-centric offense. That automatically means the Cowboy quarterback is more on the spot in this matchup.

But add in J.W. Walsh playing in place of the injured Wes Lunt, and it only adds to the pressure. Walsh is going to need to make plays for the Cowboys to win. I don't know whether he does that with his legs or his arm, but somehow, he must come up big for the Cowboys.

Texas quarterback David Ash can be more of a caretaker. Avoid turnovers. Hand off to the tailbacks. Those are his main objectives Saturday.

Walsh, on the other hand, must be a playmaker, not a caretaker.

The pressure's on.
