Jeremy Smith helped propel Oklahoma State to its 21-3 victory over Mississippi State Saturday in Houston, totaling 15 carries for 102 yards and two touchdowns as the Cowboys' new starting running back.

How did it feel to be OSU's starting running back?

It felt great. I've just got to continue to run hard. I've been playing a lot since I've been here. I guess it's my time now. I can't do it without the rest of the other guys. J.W. (Walsh) ran his butt off. The linemen blocked their butts off — they're out there hurt or banged up a little bit and they're still out there doing their thing. All the credit to those guys, credit to the defense. Great team win.

Desmond Roland proved to be a good complementary back (10 carries for 46 yards). Is that comforting to know he'll be effective when you come off the field?

We're always going to have a 1-2 punch. Des is going to be a great back to come out of this offense. The coaches do a great job in coaching. As long as we stay focused and go out every day and keep working hard, we're always going to be a great running team.

How much did the defense pick you guys up when the offense was struggling early on?

The defense, they just went out there and played an incredible game. Those guys are literally relentless. They don't care what anybody says about them. They're gonna always come out there and try to knock somebody's head in the ground. Really, I give this game to them. Those guys, man, they work their butts off. I really love our defense. Those guys work hard.
