Oklahoma State football: Texan Caleb Lavey embraces Bedlam rivalry

OSU NOTEBOOK — Linebacker Caleb Lavey grew up in the midst of the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry. But after three years in Stillwater he's attune to Bedlam.

Cowboys middle linebacker Caleb Lavey hails from Celina, Texas, where the big rivalry talk featured Hook 'Ems and Gig 'Ems.

After three years in Stillwater, however, Lavey said he has long embraced Bedlam.

“Definitely,” Lavey said. “It's like this week, there's so much emphasis on perfection and going hard and effort. The coaches, they yell a little louder. And everyone plays a little faster in preparation.

“The thing is, we don't even need the coaches yelling at us. It's the big game. It's the rivalry. You want to push yourself and have a good game. You want to win.”

Lavey understands, too, that the heightened enthusiasm spills over into the fan bases.

“It seems like those people don't really get along, either,” he said with a grin. “It's exciting. We've got a good fan base here. We're excited to go down to Norman.”

Former Del City quarterback Chazten Gonzales, who signed with TCU in 2011, is planning to walk on for the Cowboys, he said Wednesday.

Gonzales most recently has been taking classes at Rose State and working out with an eye toward returning to football.

As a senior in 2010, Gonzales threw for 1,739 yards and 17 touchdowns and ran for 734 yards and six scores.

OSU's 2013 schedule was released Tuesday, with many interesting tidbits, like three off weeks, one September home game and a Dec. 7 Bedlam clash that will be the latest regular season game in school history.

Now the Cowboys have a homecoming date, too: Oct. 19, when TCU visits Boone Pickens Stadium for a second straight season (a scheduling quirk they assumed in sliding into Texas A&M's slot).
