With less than a week until Oklahoma State opens its season against No. 1 Florida State, coach Mike Gundy was busy Monday — with two interview sessions.
The Cowboys’ coach first appeared on a weekly Big 12 Conference call with reporters and was also the featured guest on a SiriusXM college football radio show.
Here are some of Gundy’s best quotes from the day:
On Florida State’s status providing motivation for the team:
Gundy: “It think it helped in winter conditioning. Their focus in the summer seemed to be as good, if not better. We really haven’t had to push them much as far as a motivational standpoint in preseason camp … (FSU) is as good athletically (as I’ve seen) and they do a good job of coaching them and putting them in the right spot. When you play a team this good, you have to be structured, organized and get rolling early.”
On how Boone Pickens Stadium renovations reinvigorated the program:
Gundy: “It’s had a huge impact in the pride for Oklahoma State. We were in a stadium covered in rust. It was very, very outdated, and there wasn’t any pride among the Oklahoma State fans to be there, to tailgate, to be a part of winning. The team started winning and we built a new stadium. Now, there’s a sense of pride in Oklahoma State football and the 35,000 people that come to tailgate compared to when I was playing here, there was only 5,000.
“We restored the pride, and you look around the country … people recognize us now because of this new stadium.”
On the massive jumbotron at AT&T Stadium:
Gundy: “I think it can be a disadvantage. The first time we played there, I felt like I was looking more at the jumbo-tron than I was in between plays than watching the game. We got adjusted to it a little more this last time because we had played there before. But it certainly is a different environment and there’s just not any other stage that’s even similar to what you get with that big TV being right there on the field.”
On the Cowboys’ youth:
Gundy: “I think we’ll end up playing at least eight true freshman in this game, guys that will be on the field … maybe not as a starter, but in some capacity. I mentioned to them as a team in a group setting, I said, ‘You guys have a great opportunity … you’re playing high school ball last year and now you get to play the returning national champions.’ I kind of looked at some of them and they looked at me. And I said, ‘Now you guys do know you’ve got to go out there and play?’ I kind of joked with them a little bit.”
