Clements had spent the past four seasons as an assistant at Kansas State, most recently as the defensive end coach and running game coordinator.

It was Clements’ second stint in Manhattan, as the former Wildcat player began his coaching career as a student assistant in 1999 before moving up to a graduate assistant position (2001-02) and then the defensive ends coach (2003-05). He was also K-State’s recruiting coordinator from 2004-05.

“Joe Bob Clements has a reputation as a disciplined and hard-nosed coach,” Gundy said in a news release. “He has good people skills and is a strong coach on the field and has a great reputation as a recruiter.”

Clements helps fill the void left by former defensive coordinator Bill Young, who was replaced by co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Glenn Spencer last week. Young also coached the defensive line during his time in Stillwater.

Clements’ other coaching stops include San Diego State (defensive line/recruiting coordinator, 2006-07) and Kansas (defensive line, 2008).

Clements has coached four All-Big 12 defensive linemen at K-State and KU, including Meshak Williams in 2012.

Gundy still needs to hire an offensive coordinator and inside receivers coach. Todd Monken left his coordinator job in December to become the head coach at Southern Miss, while Doug Meacham was hired as Houston’s offensive coordinator earlier this month.
