Oklahoma State notebook: No bowl politicking from Mike Gundy

Gundy said: “They don't really listen. They've got a plan for what they want. The bowl committees are going to try to bring the teams that can sell the tickets and generate the most interest for their bowl, for whatever reason. And that can change year to year.”

NO BOWL POLITICKING FROM MIKE GUNDY

The bowl selection process is often about politics, with the committees wanting to set up the matchup that will bring the most fans and create the most national buzz.

OSU coach Mike Gundy acknowledged Sunday that there can be some behind-the-scenes discussions between bowls and schools. But the politicking has never come from Gundy himself.

“They don't really listen,” Gundy said of the bowls. “They've got a plan for what they want. The bowl committees are going to try to bring the teams that can sell the tickets and generate the most interest for their bowl, for whatever reason. And that can change year to year.

“I think there is some lobbying that goes on behind the scenes, but it certainly hasn't been with me as a coach. I just don't think they really care what we've got to say as coaches. They've got their own agenda, and they're going to stay with it.”

OSU also fell to 23rd in the most recent BCS standings released Sunday night. Those rankings do not matter for the Cowboys anymore, though, as a team needs to finish in the top 14 of next week's final standings to be eligible for an at-large BCS bowl berth.
