Oklahomans with the urge to dive into bitter cold water are in luck.

An Oklahoma State University student organization is putting on a charity event the first weekend in February to benefit the Special Olympics.

Volunteers at the Polar Plunge will be taking pledges to take a dip in Stillwater's Boomer Lake on Feb. 2.

This is the second year the plunge has been held in Stillwater, said Brett Murphy, a member of the Freshmen Business Student Leaders, which is coordinating the event.

With more than 100 participants, the plunge raised more than $15,000 for Special Olympics in 2012, Murphy said.

“Polar Plunge is not only an awesome event for all the plungers, but it also means the world to the Special Olympic athletes,” Murphy said.

This year is a bit different from 2012, he said, because OSU fraternities, sororities, residence halls and colleges are competing to raise the most money. The winning Greek organization, residence hall and college will receive trophies.

Also, the person who raises the most money will get to take a plane ride over Stillwater with Thomas Wikle, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, who also is a flight instructor.

Plungers must get family and friends to pledge at least $75 to be able to participate. They are encouraged to dress in costumes.

As of Tuesday afternoon, $1,765 had been pledged for the plunge.
