Oklahoma State University/A&M Board of Regents to meet Wednesday on conference realignment

BY STAFF REPORTS Published: September 19, 2011

The Oklahoma State University/A&M Board of Regents have scheduled a special meeting Wednesday to talk conference realignment.

On the heels of the Oklahoma regents' meeting Monday in Tulsa, the OSU leadership is meeting to "consider matters relating to athletic conference membership", according to a statement from the school.

"I am pleased the Board of Regents has scheduled this special meeting concerning conference affiliation," OSU president Burns Hargis said. "Oklahoma State has attractive options, and we are working with our colleagues at the University of Oklahoma to make sure the best interest of both institutions of our state are achieved."

It is expected that Monday afternoon the OU regents will give school president David Boren the power to determine the Sooners' future. Whether they stay in the Big 12 or bolt for the Pac-12 will then be determined by Boren.

The timeline for a decision is unknown.

By the OSU regents deciding to meet later this week, it appears that the school is poised to respond quickly to whatever decision might be made by OU.

"We will be prepared at the appropriate time to take whatever steps are necessary for Oklahoma State," Hargis said. "The OSU regents share our desire to see this matter resolved as soon as possible."

Regents chairman Jay Helm said, "We have been kept informed by President Hargis, who has been actively and deeply involved in discussions for several weeks. ... We appreciate the strong leadership of President Hargis to ensure the best interest of Oklahoma State is represented in any and all discussions concerning conference alignment."

The regents' meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at OSU's ConocoPhillips Alumni Center in Stillwater.
