Oklahoma State was already lacking NCAA Tournament experience, with seniors Toni Young and Lindsey Keller the only players remaining from the 2010 squad that advanced to the second round.
But only Young will see the floor in Sunday's first-round game against DePaul, as Cowgirl coach Jim Littell confirmed Keller's season — and OSU career — are over after sustaining multiple concussions. Keller hasn't played since mid-February, missing the Cowgirls' last seven games.
“It's just not the right thing for her or her future to jeopardize it,” Littell said. “I think we're all on the same page. She's been a good teammate. She's been a good player here for four years. But the next 40 years are more important than a game or two here.”
SCOUTING REPORT: DEPAUL
DePaul essentially plays two point guards in Brittany Hrynko and Chanise Jenkins, allowing the Blue Demons to frequently get out in transition or use the dribble-drive to attack the basket and kick out to open teammates.
Defensively, Littell called DePaul a bit “unconventional,” mostly because of their ability to trap at several spots on the floor. That means every Cowgirl, not just point guard Tiffany Bias, will have to handle that defensive pressure.
“First pass, they may go double it. The second pass, they may go double it,” Littell said. “So what they get you into is instead of running plays, you've got to make plays against them.”
TONI YOUNG NAMED ALL-REGION
The postseason honors keep rolling in for Young.
After becoming a unanimous All-Big 12 selection earlier this month, Young was one of seven players named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-Region 5 team this week.
Young joins Baylor's Brittney Griner and Odyssey Sims, Iowa State's Hallie Christofferson, Kansas State's Brittany Chambers, Kansas' Angel Goodrich and Oklahoma's Aaryn Ellenberg on the Region 5 team.
Young currently leads the Big 12 in rebounding (10.1 per game) and ranks fourth in scoring (15.9 points per game).
The WBCA selected 52 total honorees from eight regions. The committee will then choose its All-America team from that group, which will be announced during Final Four festivities on April 6.
