> “The chicken (bleeps),” replied a grinning Newman, quoted in The Oklahoman’s race recap.

Newman quickly departed the track to catch a flight in Tulsa, but race track manager Marty Marina told The Oklahoman in the days before the race Newman created quite a stir in the Pawnee County hamlet.

“I’m beginning to think that Paul Newman doesn’t just drive through the gates like other drivers,” Marina said. “I’m beginning to think he descends on the track from some cloud with archangels. We’ve had calls wanting him to do everything.

“One guy wanted him to eat at his pizza place. The baseball team (in Tulsa) wanted him to throw out the first ball at one of their games. Someone wanted to take him flying in an airplane. The people with the Tulsa Roughnecks (pro soccer team) didn’t even know how to pronounce Hallett, and they called up and wanted him to drive a pace car at their game.”
