OKLAHOMA TIES

City, Tulsa districts use calendar

A handful of Oklahoma districts are utilizing a year-round school calendar, according to the state Education Department.

The Oklahoma City Public School District went to a year-round calendar last school year for all of its schools. However, it had been successfully piloted at seven schools within the district for a number of years before that.

In December 2010, Oklahoma City schools Superintendent Karl Spring urged the district’s board to approve a continuous learning calendar.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, a jogger, a musician, or a student, not doing anything for 12 weeks is not going to help you,” Springer said. “I think we’re going to start something here that’s really going to be a change.”

The Tulsa School District also implemented a year-round calendar at six elementary schools, Education Department records show.
