Oklahoma's jobless rate rose to 5.1 percent in August, up from 4.9 percent in July, according to figures issued Friday by the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission.

The U.S. unemployment rate in August was 8.1 percent.

Despite the state's higher unemployment rate, there was good news in the report, said Lynn Gray, chief economist for the state agency.

Oklahoma's economy added more than 10,000 jobs in August after several months of sluggish growth, and survey numbers suggest the growth in the state's labor force included people who resumed searching for work after a long stretch of joblessness, Gray said.
