Oklahoma vs. Texas Tech: Pressing questions on Blake Bell, the defense

by Jason Kersey Published: October 26, 2013

NORMAN — Oklahoma and Texas Tech are now tentatively scheduled to kick off at 3:45 p.m. Saturday afternoon because of a weather delay.

So while you’re waiting, here is the first of three pregame blogs from Ryan Aber and I. Here, we each ask a pressing question that we hope to see answered in Saturday’s game.

ABER: Which Blake Bell shows up?
Blake Bell was terrific in his first two starts, leading OU to wins over Tulsa and Notre Dame. He was somewhere on the lower side of mediocre at best in his next two, the win over TCU and the loss to Texas. Last week against Kansas, he was about right in the middle. He made some solid throws downfield and made plays with his feet but he also missed reads and didn’t show the same excellent decision-making he did early. His interception didn’t hurt the team (it came on fourth down) but he had a wide-open Aaron Ripkowski on the play but instead forced it to Sterling Shepard. Against Texas Tech, where the game might turn into a shootout, Bell needs to be on for the Sooners to win.

KERSEY: Will the Oklahoma defense be ready for Texas Tech’s offense?
Oklahoma’s defense struggled through the first quarter of last weekend’s win at Kansas — Kansas, for crying out loud — because it couldn’t get lined up right. If the Sooners’ defense gets off to a similarly slow start against Texas Tech’s high-powered attack, this game could get ugly, and fast. It will be absolutely imperative that the Sooners hold Texas Tech at least relatively in check early in this game, because if the Red Raiders take a big lead, I don’t know if the Sooner offense has the fire power to mount a comeback.
