The National Weather Service, Norman Forecast Office:
Looking ahead to the weekend, the Hazardous Weather Outlook reports:
Thunderstorms… Severe thunderstorms are expected Saturday through at least late Sunday morning as a large storm system approaches the Southern Plains. Those who are planning or participating in outdoor activities over the weekend need to pay particularly close attention to weather forecasts.
Timing… Discrete thunderstorms may initially develop across portions of western north Texas…and southwestern and western Oklahoma during the late afternoon and early evening hours Saturday. The storms will then move northeast and east across portions of central Oklahoma Saturday night…perhaps developing into several small complexes through early Sunday morning. The threat of severe weather will shift eastward during the day Sunday to mainly east of Interstate-35.
Impacts… Large hail up to at least two inches in diameter and damaging winds over 70 mph will be the main threats through late Saturday night. However…the initial storms that develop during the late afternoon Saturday and continue through the evening hours may have the potential to produce tornadoes. Hail sizes should decrease to around half dollars by Sunday morning.
Discrete storms could form along a dryline from western OK into north Texas late Saturday afternoon. Severe storms will be possible with large hail and strong winds. Tornadoes will also be possible.
Storms will continue to move east and may develop into one or more storm complexes Saturday evening. Severe storms will remain possible with hail to the size of golf balls or larger and wind gusts to 75 mph. Tornadoes will also be possible.
Severe storms will remain possible overnight Saturday as the storms move east. Hail to the size of half dollars and wind gusts up to 65 mph will be possible.
Showers and thunderstorms will remain possible Sunday morning across parts of Oklahoma and north Texas. A few of the storms could still produce hail up to half dollars and strong wind gusts.
Additional storms may develop near a dryline Sunday afternoon.
If storms develop… some could become severe producing large hail and strong winds.
A few tornadoes would also be possible. There is uncertainty for Sunday afternoon because what happens during this time depends on how things evolve Saturday into Sunday morning.
