SAND SPRINGS - A Sand Springs woman foiled an attempted rape Sunday at an area park by fighting off her knife-wielding assailant, police said.

The woman told Sand Springs police she was running in the River City Park at about 4:20 p.m. when a man on a black bicycle rode past her, Sand Springs Police Department Assistant Chief Mike Carter said. The woman told police that as she passed under Oklahoma 97, she saw the man again.

This time the suspect displayed a handgun and told her to walk into a wooded area near the park. She told police that when they reached the woods, the man produced a knife and ordered her to perform sexual acts.
