TULSA (AP) — Two Tulsa women who were critically injured by a pit bull in on the city's north side are now in fair condition.

A St. John Medical Center spokeswoman said 78-year-old Irene Parker and 43-year-old Beverly Wright remained hospitalized Thursday for injuries suffered in Tuesday's attack.

Authorities say the two were leaving religious literature at homes in the area when the dog attacked. A man working nearby who heard their screams shot and killed the dog, which is now being tested for rabies.

Tulsa animal welfare officials will decide whether to ask for charges against the owner, whose name hasn't been released. An animal welfare manager did not immediately return a phone call, but said earlier that the dog wasn't in violation of any ordinances and no charges are expected.
