Logan Davis comforted his steer in the sale ring. All the attention and bidding spooked the 1,335-pound animal.

"You’ve got to catch his attention,” said Davis, a freshman at Newcastle High School. "You’ve got to distract him.”

Davis was one of more than 6,500 students who competed Monday at the 95th annual Oklahoma Youth Expo, an event organizers bill as the largest youth livestock show in the world.

Davis’ animal was named the bronze medallion steer — the third best at the show.

Bids flew at the sale of champions, and Davis walked away with $7,500 from American Farmers and Ranchers and Chesapeake Energy.

Davis said he plans to use the money for savings and for future animal projects.

"It’s a good way to help pay for college,” he said.

Several area students placed highly at the annual event at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City.
