LOS ANGELES — Carrie Underwood of Checotah and Rascal Flatts, featuring guitarist Joe Don Rooney of Picher, were among the winners Wednesday night at the 35th annual People’s Choice Awards.
Underwood was selected by Internet voters as favorite female singer, star under 35 and country song for "Last Name.” Rascal Flatts won the favorite group award. Brad Pitt, who was born in Shawnee, won favorite leading man. Ellen DeGeneres and "Dancing with the Stars” also were early winners at the People’s Choice Awards. "I wish I could share this with you,” DeGeneres told the audience while clutching her trophy for favorite talk show host. "I could throw it on the ground and smash it into a million pieces, and give each one of you a little piece of it, but that’s violent, and that’s probably why you voted for me, because I’m not violent.” Other early winners selected in categories from movies, television and music included "Dancing With the Stars” as favorite reality show, Chris Brown as favorite male singer, and Kate Hudson as favorite leading lady. Tina Fey, who was voted The Associated Press’ Entertainer of the Year last month, won favorite funny female star. The 38-year-old comedian impressed voters largely with her indelible impression of Gov. Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live.” Adam Sandler picked up the prize for favorite funny male star, which was the first fan-voted award given out during the evening. "I appreciate this,” the star said. "I have honestly always made my movies for the people.”Fan-favorite ceremony
The fan-favorite CBS ceremony was hosted by Queen Latifah and returned to the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles for its typical star-studded live show format. Last year’s edition featured stars accepting their trophies on location, not on stage.
Awards selected by Internet balloting was presented in over 40 categories, including favorite talk-show host, scene-stealing guest star, rock song and leading lady.
