It was the night before Robert Gay’s 13th birthday.

"I remember laying in bed scared out of my mind,” he recalls.

The next day, Gay and his friends would stalk each other with guns, or as they’re also called, markers. He was the guest of honor at a paintball party arranged by his father. He had a blast.
