Nearly two-thirds of Oklahomans oppose legalizing marijuana for recreational use, according to a new edition of Sooner Survey.
Sixty-five percent said recreational use of the drug should not be legal, with 30 percent saying that it should. Of those opposing, 59 percent strongly oppose it.
Veteran pollster Pat McFerron, president of Cole, Hargrave, Snodgrass and Associates said the opposition is strongest among Republicans (72 percent oppose legalization), though it’s also strong among Democrats, with 60 percent opposing.
McFerron noted, however, major differences in age groups. Seniors are the group most opposed (78 percent) but the gap narrows significantly with younger groups.
For those under 45, opposition is 52 percent, with 45 percent in favor. Those between the ages of 55 and 64 are also more inclined to support legalization.
“It is yet to be seen if attitudes toward legalization change as voters age, or if they bring their support with them,” McFerron wrote.
Some facts from the poll:
_ More Oklahomans oppose legalization than oppose President Barack Obama;
_ More Oklahoma voters say they strongly oppose legalization than say they are strongly pro-life.
_ In the Oklahoma City media market, opposition runs at 63 percent; in the Tulsa media market, it’s 68 percent; in rural areas, it’s 68 percent.
The poll was taken Jan. 13-17 among 500 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percent.
