Oklahoma's Mike Stoops on sideline argument with Jerry Montgomery: 'It happens during the course of a game'

NORMAN — After Kansas scored its second touchdown to take an early 13-0 lead on Oklahoma last weekend, ESPN’s cameras caught defensive coordinator Mike Stoops and first-year defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery in a heated argument.

Head coach Bob Stoops appeared to step in and play peacemaker.

“We don’t consider it anything out of the ordinary,” Mike Stoops said. “It happens during the course of a game.”

Asked what had him upset, Mike Stoops said, “We were sliding our defense one way that we weren’t adept at doing at that particular time. We were trying to get it straightened out. … I guess it’s a big deal to you guys.”

Bob Stoops said the dispute was the result of the Sooner defense being out of position early in the eventual 34-19 victory.

“I didn’t say anything,” Bob Stoops said. “I let them figure it out.”

When a reporter noted that it was clear from the tape that Bob Stoops definitely said something, the coach responded, “I said a lot, but I’m not gonna sit here and detail it for you.”
