State Treasurer Ken Miller is marking National 529 College Savings Day on Tuesday by starting out the state's summer reading program and announcing a sweepstakes to help students save for college.

Miller and two Oklahoma City Thunder Girls will read to Capitol Hill Elementary students and kick off the Think Big! Save for College! Sweepstakes, a partnership between the Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.

“The state's Summer Reading Program is a chance for Oklahoma children to continue learning during the summer months through reading and other activities,” Miller said. “While kids are engaged in these activities, the sweepstakes reminds families about the importance of saving now for a child's college education.”

The sweepstakes will award $2,529 for an Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan account to two Summer Reading Program participants. One winner will be selected from the children's program and one from the teen program. Additionally, the library of each winning reader will be given $1,000 to help fund its summer reading programs.

The Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan is a state-sponsored, tax-advantaged 529 college savings plan managed by TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing Inc. Introduced in April 2000, the Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan has more than $468 million in total assets and more than 47,000 accounts.
