Voters in every county in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area will have to decide during Tuesday's general election who will be the top law officer.

In Oklahoma County, Sheriff John Whetsel will face Darrell Sorrels, a retired sheriff's deputy.

Whetsel, 63, of Choctaw, is an incumbent seeking his fifth term. He is a Democrat. Sorrels, 58, of Midwest City, works security at the federal courthouse in Oklahoma City as a contract employee of the U.S. Marshals Service. He is a Republican.

Cleveland County Sheriff Joe Lester, a Republican, will face Independent candidate Kelly Owings, of Lexington.

Lester was first elected sheriff of Cleveland County in 2008. He began his law enforcement career while serving in the military in the late 1960s.

Lester, 68, went on to serve in the Tulsa Police Department from 1969-91, before taking over as the police chief at the University of Oklahoma, a post he held until 2003.

Owings, 50, once served as a Lexington police officer.

In Canadian County, incumbent Sheriff Randall Edwards, a Republican, is facing a former subordinate in Tuesday's election.

Edwards was elected in 2008, defeating incumbent Lewis Hawkins by a wide margin.

Independent candidate Joshua Moore, who once worked for Edwards as a deputy, has been in law enforcement for 13 years, according to his website.

Moore has worked as an investigator during his law enforcement career and even traveled to Iraq in 2007 to train police officers in the war-torn country.
