A building that served as the home to Del City's police department soon will be razed to make way for a fire station.

The building on Epperly Drive was constructed in 1948 and has served in a number of capacities during its history, including home to the fire department and city government.

Del City police and the municipal court were the last two agencies to occupy the building. Both moved out when a new $4 million complex opened in 2012.

“We're planning on tearing it down,” City Manager Mark Edwards said. “It has definitely seen better days.”

Edwards said it could be demolished this summer. The city considered renovating it, but estimates were more than $1 million.

“There is some attachment to it,” he said. “A lot of our older guys have only known that building. There has been some discussion in the past about modernizing it, but it's in terrible condition.”

Edwards said it may be up to five years before the new fire station is built. The site will have to be cleared, and the new station also will have to move through funding and construction processes.
