PERRY — A van filled with illegal immigrants crashed Monday morning on Interstate 35 after the driver fell asleep, killing one person, Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers said.
The driver, Jonathan Martinez, 26, of Houston, was treated and released at a hospital before being taken into custody by the Noble County Sheriff's office, troopers said.
One passenger, Francisco Roda Molina, 18, of San Rafael, El Salvador, was dead at the scene of the wreck about 8:45 a.m. one mile south of Perry on I-35.
Another male passenger, whose name was not available, was critically injured and taken to OU Medical Center. Six more passengers were taken into custody by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
Troopers said an unknown number of passengers fled the scene before authorities arrived.
The van was headed north on I-35 when the driver fell asleep, crossed both lanes of traffic and rolled in the median, coming to rest on its top.
Martinez was the only one in the van wearing a seat belt.
