NEW YORK – Trying to wrangle the five cheeky mates from the phenom boy band One Direction into an orderly, coherent press conference is like corralling a furry, frisky quintet of wild kittens into meowing in unison.
The five band members – Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson – are spirited, prankish, irreverent, goofy and, most of all, very young. And while they appear to be unfailingly sweet, polite and friendly to one and all, they don’t seem to have a clue about conforming to the rigors of PR practice.
During a freewheeling (to put it mildly) press conference at the Four Seasons Hotel to promote their new documentary, “One Direction: This Is Us,” the boys cut up, joked with journalists, interrupted one another, mugged and wisecracked and generally made a good-spirited hash of the proceedings.
So while it’s difficult to construct a cogent and intelligible interview from their rambling discourse with journalists, we can offer a few pithy sound bites from the scattered proceedings.
On being filmed for a documentary: “It makes you feel vulnerable, putting yourself out that much. It was exciting but it was nerve wracking, too.” – Harry
On being role models to their young fans: “We don’t like to think of ourselves like that, but I kind of suppose we have to. It’s a responsibility.” – Liam
On a Rolling Stones-like longevity of rock stardom: “I’ve got really bad knees. I don’t think I’m going to be running around the stage in 60 years. So I’m telling you that now. Confirm, I won’t be in One Direction when I’m 60 years old.”- Niall
On boy bands: “I’ve not really been a fan of boy bands before.” – Louis
On being in a boy band: “I don’t think it’s anything we need to hide from. It’s that kind of thing we just take our own road with it. We don’t dance. It’s not all regimented. It’s kind of freestyle.” – Liam
On his engagement to girlfriend Perrie Edwards: “That’s obviously private between me and her. We just got engaged and we’re very happy. And that’s about as much as I’ll say about that.” Zayn
On his favorite thing to do in off time: “Every time I go home, I just go to sleep on my sofa. It’s just nice to fall asleep and know you don’t have an alarm set.” – Harry
On their songwriting process: “The more relaxed the vibe is, the better. If we’ve got a barbeque going and a guitar, it makes it even better. That’s a good vibe.” – Zayn
On one reporter typing notes on her laptop: “I feel sorry for that one there. She has to do all that typewriting. I’ll try to speak in short sentences.” – Harry
“She’s probably one of those, you know, court clerks.” – Niall
