Pop sensations One Direction on Thursday were the latest figures to be unveiled at Madame Tussauds New York. Revealed for the first time before enthusiastic fans, the figures sport outfits donated by the boys themselves and are seated casually on a school-style double bench with sufficient space for fans to sit beside them. The figures will remain in New York for 12 weeks through October 11, before continuing on to Madame Tussauds Sydney (October 24, 2013 to January 28, 2014) and Madame Tussauds Tokyo (February 12, 2014 to May 12, 2014).
A group of fanatic “Direction-ers” were present to witness the stateside unveil and deliver the verdict on how their heroes’ wax figures compare to the real thing. “They look exactly like them. I have the poster of [the boys] with the wax figures and they look like twins,” said Victoria Rymer, 13. “I don’t have words to describe it. I’m so happy, I’m still shaking!” “They’re really lifelike. It feels like I was right there with them,” added Morgan Bailey, 10. Additionally, Madame Tussauds will be offering a “1D Kid Free!” promotion through Sunday, July 21. Children 12 and under sporting One Direction gear and accompanied by a paying adult will receive free admission. Please visit www.nycwax.com for further details.
The band was stunned by the accuracy of the figures when they saw them face to face at a private viewing in the UK. Zayn commented, “They look wicked, they’re bang on!” with Louis adding that he “can’t wait for fans to see them”. Niall was impressed: “It’s really good, isn’t it?! This is weird – he’s wearing my actual shoes!” he said. The boys were overwhelmed by the experience: “This is definitely a privilege, getting a wax figure,” Liam said, and Harry agreed “It’s amazing and such an honour.”
“We are delighted to welcome One Direction to New York on their Madame Tussauds World Tour, and judging by the reaction of fans today, their stay here is going to be a huge success,” said Bret Pidgeon, Regional General Manager Madame Tussauds New York. “The demand for them in New York has been staggering, and I know the anticipation in Sydney and Tokyo, where they will journey to next, has been equally as overwhelming.”
Over the course of two sittings with each band member, the talented Madame Tussauds studios team took hundreds of precise measurements, examined their skin tones, matched their eye colors, and tested hair swatches to ensure total accuracy. Finally, the boys’ personal hair stylist, Louise Teasdale, performed a meticulous hair analysis and made tweaks for the utmost precision. A team of 40, including sculptors, molders, hair stylists, colorists and wardrobe experts worked tirelessly for four months to create the figures.
The outfits were donated by the band members themselves. The figures are styled in their signature smart-casual, color-coordinated stage fashions. Zayn sports a gray suit with bright red high top trainers and a red check shirt. Harry embraces a more relaxed look with white trainers, gray jeans, a white tee-shirt, and blazer. Liam is outfitted in navy suit trousers, a white shirt and navy waistcoat, while Louis is dressed in black trousers and a navy shirt, finished with his trademark missing socks. Finally, Niall sports white high top trainers, navy trousers and a red tee-shirt with a gray cardigan.
