Only you can protect your property

Three years ago this month, I came home to a dark home. I always leave the porch light on.

I felt uneasy walking up the steps. Surely I hadn’t forgotten to leave the light on. Before I stepped onto the porch, I saw my front door was wide open. My body flushed cold with fear. Someone had been in my house.

PREVENTION TIPS
Harrah Police Chief Eddie Holland offers these tips to help recover stolen property:

• Take photos of your stuff, including the serial or tag numbers.

• Take pictures of your big items, such as TVs, lawn mowers, trailers, guns and cars.

• Take pictures of your small valuables, like jewelry.

• Don’t leave your car title in your glove box. Put it in a safe place in your home.

I sprinted back to my car and drove to my boyfriend’s mother’s home a few blocks away. She called police. I went back home, and an officer was searching my home with a flashlight.

I walked in and turned the lights on. A burglar broke in the back door and left through the front door with my movies, CDs, stereo, DVD player and other items.

They left my TV, which apparently was too old and lame to even bother carrying out.

"Yeah,” the policeman said, "they don’t really steal those any more.” I laughed.

But the officer told me the odds of getting my stolen stuff back were slim to none. I didn’t have any serial numbers. I didn’t know exactly what movies and CDs I had.

The only identifying mark I had for anything was a Dole banana sticker on the front of my stereo.

Long story short, I never saw my stuff again, and I had to learn a hard lesson: No one but me will look after my property.
