The trial of a former Oklahoma legislator accused of bribery is underway in Oklahoma City.

Opening statements were delivered Tuesday in the case of Moore Republican Randy Terrill, who is charged with offering to set up former state Sen. Debbe Leftwich with a state job in exchange for a promise not to seek re-election in 2010 so that a Republican colleague of Terrill's could seek Leftwich's open seat.

Assistant District Attorney Jimmy Harmon told jurors the 44-year-old Terrill was motivated mostly by political power.

Terrill has maintained his innocence and contends the charges were politically motivated. Leftwich's trial is scheduled to begin later this year.

If convicted, Terrill and Leftwich both face up to two years in prison and a $1,000 fine.
