Openness laws help bring stories to you
Open records and open meetings are essential to a wide variety of topics you read about every day in The Oklahoman.
This is Sunshine Week, a national effort to promote open government. Following are some of the stories published in the past year that we could not have written if not for laws requiring government records and meetings be open to the public.Auditor convicted
Former state Auditor Jeff McMahan and his wife, Lori McMahan, were convicted in June of conspiracy and two counts of violating the federal Travel Act for taking illegal campaign contributions, trips and expensive jewelry. Open records were a key in reporting details of the inquiry into Jeff McMahan starting in 2007, and continued coverage of the legal proceedings would not have been possible without laws requiring court proceedings and records be open to the public.
Elephants to Tulsa
Oklahoma City’s two female Asian elephants, Asha and Chandra, left in June for Tulsa, where keepers hope they will breed with the Tulsa Zoo’s male elephant, Sneezy. A series of stories in The Oklahoman last year looked at the plan to breed the elephants and relied on public records to detail the Oklahoma City Zoo’s coming Asia exhibit, which must be complete on time for the pair to return as scheduled in 2010.
