ADA — An off-duty police officer shot at a shoplifter Friday evening at a Walmart store in Ada, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reported.

A store employee called police at 5 p.m. Friday and reported a shoplifter was stealing beer from the store. An off-duty Ada police officer who was already at the store heard a police dispatcher report the call on her radio and tried to stop the shoplifter.

The shoplifter, later identified as Cordell Tebet, 26, ran into the parking lot, jumped into a pickup truck and drove away, almost hitting the officer, OSBI officials reported.

The officer and an off-duty reserve officer from Roff fired at Tebet as he drove away. No one was injured in the shooting, OSBI officials said. The officer followed the truck until one of its tires went flat after being struck by a bullet.

Tebet fled on foot, but was quickly arrested on complaints of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and eluding an officer, OSBI officials said.

OSBI officials are investigating the shooting.
