OSSAA rules Jones player ineligible; School must forfeit six wins

The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association ruled Thursday that a Jones football player was ineligible and forced the Longhorns to forfeit six wins — including five district wins.

OSSAA Executive Secretary Ed Sheakley said Jones would appeal the ruling at next Wednesday’s meeting of the OSSAA’s board of directors.

Also Wednesday, Sand Springs was forced to forfeit its win over Claremore last month.

The forfeitures are devastating to Jones’ season. Jones stood 7-2 overall and 6-0 in District 2A-2 and had clinched the district title heading into tonight’s game against Bethel.

The action lifts Millwood into the top spot in the district and Little Axe into second place, which would mean a home playoff game for Little Axe in its first-ever playoff appearance. Jones now stands 1-8 overall and 1-5 in district play. SeeWorth Academy forfeited last week’s game to Jones.

Jones coach Dave Martin did not return calls for comment.

Sheakley said the OSSAA first became aware of an eligibility issue with a Jones player, who he would not identify, when the OSSAA received an anonymous e-mail regarding the player.

A subsequent investigation found the player, who is in his first season at Jones after transferring from another school, to be ineligible.

Jones had not filed for a hardship waiver on the player’s behalf before the investigation into the player’s eligibility.

Earlier this week, Tulsa Washington forfeited another football win after forfeiting two late last month after eligibility problems and recruiting violations were discovered.

Jenks has also been investigated this season. That investigation led to the suspension of Trojans’ football coach Allan Trimble, an assistant coach and the Jenks athletic director but did not lead to any forfeits for this season. Jenks was forced to forfeit nine wins from 2008, when it made the Class 6A finals.

The investigation into the Jenks situation was also brought about by an anonymous e-mail to the association.

“We get probably 100 of them a day,” Jackson said. “Most of them wind up being nothing, or something we’ve already looked into, but we check them all out.”

Jackson said the frequency of the e-mails has picked up since the Jenks investigation.

“We’ve definitely seen more of them in the last couple months,” he said.

The OSSAA has also heard from school officials more often, as they’ve checked to make sure they are following the OSSAA’s rules regarding eligibility.

“We’re getting a lot of calls now,” Jackson said. “If anything else, this is helping the schools now to be extremely careful. That’s what we want.”

Yeah go to court!! That is really teaching your players how to be accountable. If you cheat blame it on others and take them to court, its the American Way.

Looks like the OSSAA is still on their righteous warpath, this time with Durant. Durant got a temporary injunction through the Bryan County Court that allowed the alledgedly ineligible player to play. If Jones, Durant, and Sand Springs feel good about their cases and their appeals fail, watch these teams all go to the county courthouse. The OSSAA might get bled with legal costs. Wednesday's hearings certainly will be interesting.
Football, Jones - Nov 6, 2009 at 11:17 pm
The ineligible player was a junior...what about the seniors this year? How do you think they feel seeing as this was their last year? This for most of them will be the last year they play football. What was turning out to be the most memorable year for them has now turned into the worst for them. There ought to be a way without punishing all the team. I just want to say to all Jones football players..they can take away your title but they can't take away how you played with heart and soul nor the fact you won the games. Those that started this and could not take getting beat still know they got it handed to them. They also have to live with the fact that they just might not be the true champions.

Joe, one problem. Why would the OHSSA okay it then in the first place if Jones filed all the proper paperwork?
Football, Jones - Nov 6, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Regardless of who made the complaint, the kids parents and school officials tried to work the system and got caught.

You know, it would make sense but if what you gentlemen say is true (no offense) this is just a flat out dispicable thing to do. Funny the timing of the complaint made now rather than at the beginning of the year. Wow. Just wow.

Football, Jones - Nov 6, 2009 at 2:14 pm
yes, That is the one. He wanted the young man to go to his school and play for him and was turned down. He is the one that made the initial complaint.

Wait a minute Nels. You're talking about Kenny Young, the Bishop McGuinness Coach and that he torpedoed Jones' season? Fill me in. You got me curious.
Football, Jones - Nov 6, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Jones had paperwork on file with the ossaa, they submited a new student form just like they would for any new student with an address in their district ans the ossaa said everything was ok. Then when Kenny young got mad that the young man in question wouldnt accept his offer of gas money and meal money he called and complained. He also talked the Millwood coach into calling. The ossaa then told the school that they needed to have the paperwork signed by Choctaw schools not Carl Albert since that is where the boy originally lived. The only thing Jones is guilty of is jumping up from a nobody to a very good team and knocking off some favorites along the way. No body in power seems to care about the 12 upperclassmen on Millwoods roster that didnt go to school at that school last year, 2 of them from Shawnee without any signed paperwork. In my opinion the ossaa dropped the ball on this one. It is easy to sit in an ivory tower and pass judgement on other peoples lives. I know Jenks had to give up last years wins and their silver ball but are they are still in the playoffs this year because the ossaa said you dont punish kids for the actions of adults. Well guess what ossaa you just took away something from a bunch of good hardworking kids that cant be replaced. Im sure those kids will remember that for the rest of their lives. Good job, keep up the terrible work. The ossaa is a joke, they do what they want and dont have to answer to anybody. Sorry to be so long winded but something needs to change.

That stinks for the program and the kids. They are having a great year, and something like this happens. It's a shame. Things are changing so much. Football has become so political. It's becaming a big circus. I don't like all this stuff that's happening. It's sickening. Football now is not the most important thing anymore, it's who's moving where.
Randy, MWC - Nov 6, 2009 at 10:49 am
Randy, word is already getting around town about what went down. It's not going to be pretty at that next school board meeting.
Football, Jones - Nov 6, 2009 at 10:36 am
I agree football. It is not the coaches fault. It is the principals who should be held accountable. I hear the principal apologized to the team for his mistake.
Randy, MWC - Nov 6, 2009 at 9:43 am
All I'm going to say is that if the Jones High School principal doesn't have written authorization from Carl Albert High School okaying the player (I won't say who it is) in question to play this year when he transferred, that principal needs to be fired. This one isn't the coaching staff's fault at all.
Football, Jones - Nov 6, 2009 at 9:35 am
Inside info alert. Ask Kenny Young who turned in the Jones kid. The kid from Jones is a good player. He got offered by North Carolina last week. Kenny couldn't get him to come over. Guess who told Millwood to check up on this?
Randy, MWC - Nov 6, 2009 at 8:37 am
His parents live in the Choctaw school district. They have a child that goes to Carl Albert and another child that goes to Choctaw schools and the child in question goes to Jones. They bought a house in Jones so that he could play ball there. The parents do not live in that home.

Watch out or the OSSAA will get you if you are a public school! Now I want to see them go after all the OKC schools that are class 4A and smaller because this garbage goes on all the time. How about all the softball players that transfer illegally or at the last minute?
berry, arapaho - Nov 6, 2009 at 8:20 am
Don't give the district title to Millwood too quickly. They too should and probably will be investigated for "transfer" players. Check their roster... how many of those kids are actually from Millwood?

What a sad situation for the players who have worked so long and hard. But, rules are rules and if someone was ineligible then they are ineligible, should not have been playing PERIOD!. Wether it was the school-coaches or who ever not filing correct paperwork, the parents or who ever. The boy was not eligible to play. Many parents, coaches and administrations try to sneak around and play someone by changing addresses, next of kin or whatever to play players that are not legal. Sad to see those young men loose their season because someone tried to cheat, either to win games, or to have their kid go somewhere to play just for the sake of playing time. He should have stayed where he was eligible to play, even if it mean he would be on the bench till maybe a Senior. If he was such a superstar, why then did he have to move to get playing time?
Paula, Searcy - Nov 6, 2009 at 6:15 am
With the appeal being heard next Wednesday, what will this do to the playoff schedule? The schools in 2A-1 and 2A-2 have to sit around until next Wednesday to find out who they will play and have one day to prepare for Friday's game. In some cases, teams will have 1 day to install a game plan and arrange for transportation.
Chuck, Oklahoma City - Nov 6, 2009 at 5:08 am
Excluding Jones High School and including Sand Springs High School, Booker T Washington High School and Jenks High School, we see how the East-Side is falling apart. Booker T Washington and their 40 ineligible players? wow...
Andrew, Midwest City - Nov 6, 2009 at 1:34 am
What a shame for these kids who grew up in this small town. Unfortunately a parent from another town wanted his kid to play football and not have to compete at a larger school and took advantage of this school and robbed these kids of their season.

John-relations can be anything you want them to be as long as the OSSAA approves the transfer.

Mike, since when do "relations in Jones" count as residency? My kid has relations everywhere, can I send him to school there to help them out? NO. Get a clue.

Jones has not won a District championship in over 20 years and was a losing team before this young man came out. Why blame him for lifting the team to 7-2 and the District Championship? The problem was not his undoing but representatives because the family was forthright in all they did.
As far as the family screwing him up--come on, get real. His Dad was a Major League player and has routes to deploy his child in any school he wanted-public or private. It was more of a local decision that was the best fit for his son. Any of us would have made that decision.

The kid lives 1 mile from choctaw.. they have kids at carl albert, choctaw and jones. the parents screwed the whole team there are alot of seniors that just got the season taken away all for one persons eggo
justin - Nov 5, 2009 at 5:07 pm
Mike- The kid could have played in Choctaw. Lord knows they could use him. I could care less where the kid plays and wish him the best of luck. But you have to ask if he lives in Choctaw and they could obviosly use him then why all the transfers. It looks like his parents screwed him and JHS.

The issue is he aready had an open transfer to Carl Albert. He could not get another one. He could have moved to Jones to play based on residency. That's the question. The family has other students that currently attend Choctaw schools and not by transfer but by residency. If the family moved to Jones, then they would have to request an open transfer to Choctaw for their other students. The question remains, does the family live in Choctaw or Jones. I'm betting Choctaw.

JoeD- you must not know the layout of school districts in East Ok County. Choctaw has many stop points as do many cities. The kid was not given an opportunity thus geographically he could transfer to another school with proper approvals.
I can guarantee you that this kid had talent and could have played at any school given the opportunity.
Again, I ask...why do people care where he lived? He is still just a Junior in High school looking to find an opportunity to go to College. It is a shame that people try to belittle the kid when in fact rules are set my men desiring the control of a sport they most likely never played.

Contrary to the article, Jenks did forfeit 9 games from last season, as well as the silver ball for state-runnerup (who plays for silver, anyway) for use of the player determined by the OSSAA to have been ineligible.

It's the gold ball for Jenks this year.

McGuiness can do what they want since they are private.

The young man at Jones is most likely a Carl Albert kid who moved there over the summer. His family has always lived in the Choctaw area and seriously doubt any misleadings as far as eligibility. I know he has relations in Jones that also allowed his residency.
OSSAA most likely fielded a call from a jealous fan or parent and all this is out of jealousy. Sickening because who cares where the young man goes. It is his future and his career.
