OSU basketball: Kamari Murphy leaving Cowboys' program

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State’s revolving roster door revealed another player hitting the exit Thursday with news of Kamari Murphy’s intent to transfer, likely back to the New York City area.

As reported in The Oklahoman last week, Murphy had been considering a transfer – with one program insider suggesting the odds at 50-50 – before events back home may have swayed his decision.

Murphy, a Brooklyn native, revealed on Twitter Wednesday one possible added incentive for returning home, a stroke suffered by his grandmother.

“… she’s my backbone, my heart,” Murphy wrote in his post. “My reason for being the MAN I am today!”

Neither Murphy or OSU coach Travis Ford made an official announcement on the player’s planned departure, but Dana Dingle, coach of the summer league New York Lightning, confirmed to media there that Murphy was leaving.

“He’s just open right now, just seeing who’s interested and all of that,” Dingle told “No one school in particular.”

Murphy started 21 games for the Cowboys last season, averaging 6.1 points and 6.3 rebounds. He was close to former assistant coach Steve Middleton, who fired in March, which may have played into his initial consideration to transfer.

Minus Murphy, the Cowboys have just six scholarship players – Le’Bryan Nash, Phil Forte, Michael Cobbins, Leyton Hammonds, Jeffrey Carroll and Marek Soucek – remaining from the team that finished the recently completed season.
