OSU basketball: Marcus Smart is the Cowboys' ultimate difference maker

OSU coach Travis Ford said: ‘Oh man, Marcus is doing Marcus things.'

Travis Ford kept rattling off difference-makers following OSU's 73-72 win at West Virginia.

Markel Brown, who delivered the game-winning shot, a 3-pointer with: 11.9 remaining.

Kamari Murphy, who played a career-high 39 minutes, scrapping and battling inside as the Cowboys' lone reliable big man.

Le'Bryan Nash, who contributed a much-needed 18 points and six rebounds on an afternoon when offense was hard to come by.

Phil Forte, who fired in three timely 3-pointers.

And all were major factors.

Then there was Marcus Smart.

Being Marcus Smart: 22 points, a career-high 13 rebounds, five assists, one steal and one blocked shot.

The ultimate difference maker.

“Oh man, Marcus is doing Marcus things,” Brown said, gushing about Smart's recent impact.

With OSU in tough tussles the past two games — wins over Texas and WVU — Smart has produced two of his four career double-doubles and two of his three-best rebounding games as a Cowboy.

The double-doubles are his first of this season.

So that call for help put out by Ford in the aftermath of season-ending Cobbins' injury?

Smart has always had an innate sense for knowing when his team needed a hoisting on his shoulders. And he's saddling up, confirming his status as the Big 12's best player and repositioning himself in the National Player of the Year picture.
