OSU commitment Josh Stewart credits move to Texas for his development

The Denton Guyer standout relocated from Louisiana to Texas after Hurricane Katrina. He says leaving was bittersweet, but the increased focus on football in Texas helped him realize his potential.

“I think he is, pound-for-pound, the best football player in Texas.”

Stewart never left the field as a senior. He played cornerback on defense, played receiver on offense, and returned kicks and punts. Walsh estimates Stewart played 100 percent of the time on defense, 75 percent of the time on offense and on every special team unit except one.

“He never wanted to come off,” Walsh said. “Fatigue was not a factor for him, that's why I say, pound-for-pound, he's the man.”

Stewart finished with 56 receptions for 971 yards and 10 touchdowns as a receiver and added 85 tackles, 12 pass breakups and seven interceptions as a cornerback while helping Guyer earn a state title game berth.

Expected to play receiver for the Cowboys, Stewart has very good ball skills, quickness and athletic ability, making him a talent who could help OSU immediately this fall.

And, as a good friend of OSU quarterback commitment J.W. Walsh, Stewart could have an even bigger long-term impact. He will join Walsh in Stillwater with the prospect of catching plenty of passes from his prep quarterback, with whom he's already created a great connection, during their careers in Cowboy uniforms.

“When I step on the field with him, there's not a better connection,” J.W. Walsh said. “It's pretty special the things we can do when we are together.”
